oTHE LIFEBOAT--The importance of the lifeboat is not to be underestimated. Millions. of men follow the sea, to say nothing of the millions who are passengers across it. You may not know the difference between bow or stern, mast or boom, but landlubber as well as sailor can see the need of lifeboats on marine vessels. Let me propose a question. Would you, as an individual, consider leaving one sinking ship for another? That doesn't sound like good reasoning, does it? Yet many do.
Let me show you how. Yes, one would be foolish to do this literally, but more so spiritually. We are more than just physical bodies sinking with disease and age. Within every person is a soul that lives forever. Our bodies are but shells that house the real person that is sinking in sin and despair without God. You would be amazed at the unsafe lifeboats people choose as safety for the soul. Let me mention one. I'll give it the name "RELIGION". This seems to be a large and very beautiful life-saving vessel. The noted religious heads of the world declare and guarantee its performance. They boast that they can carry to safety all who board. But upon close examination it is more of a sure-death-trap than a lifeboat. All the religious lifeboats are denominationally named and there for the choosing, but I declare no one has ever come ashore to safety. They seem right for some, but the Bible says, "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man: but the end thereof are the ways of death" (Proverbs 14:12). No religious ship will land in God's harbor. You see, religion is of man's doing, man's design, man-powered, man-controlled, headed to man's destiny-- the grave and the lake of fire.
If page and time permitted, we could speak of lifeboats of education, science, humanism, government, etc., with many trusting in these. However, the only safe LIFEboat was constructed by the giver of life Himself. God built this boat some 2,000 years ago with keel, frames and planking made out of a tree that stood outside Jerusalem. The wood was hammered together by nails that pierced the hands and feet of the Son of God, and was sealed within and without with the blood of Jesus Christ. The choice is yours. Trust your soul into the hands of the One who made it, the One who is "...THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE: no man cometh unto the Father [Heaven] but by me" [Jesus] (John 14:6). Trust Jesus to be your Saviour today.
