DROWNING--Drowning is death caused by suffocation in water. The lungs fill with water and the body soon, through fear, stiffens and sinks. Unconsciousness comes almost immediately, but not death, because the heart will continue to beat for a few minutes, depending on the temperature of the water. Immediate attention is an absolute if the victim is to live.

The word "drown" can be used in many ways other than to be overcome of water. Let me name a few.

1. Overcome of money--The desire for money fills the person to the point that it may push him into crime, destroy his home, or ruin his health. The Bible is correct in 1 Timothy 6:9, 10 for it says, "But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil... ".

2. Overcome of hardships--Depression and discouragement abound, overcoming many, at times bringing divorce, suicide and mental illness. An abundance of adverse circumstances has overcome many, and only with God's help can you have stability and comfort in hardship. 2 Corinthians1:3, 4

speaks of "...the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation... ".

3. Overcome of pleasure--Many live only for such. All they think about and plan for is pleasure. Pleasure sure has its place, but it is easy to get out of place, to overcome you. The Bible speaks of "...lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God" (2 Timothy 3:4).

Overcome of water, money, hardships, pleasure--there is no end to the drowning victims. The way to revive the person who drowns in water is to keep them afloat, then get the water out. The same is true for someone overcome of anything else. Only Jesus Christ can keep you afloat. Drowning is inevitable for all who refuse Him. Do you need CPR (Christ Provided Redemption) today?

Drowning was an actual form of punishment in most European countries from ancient times until the early 1600's. Strange that the Bible speaks of those whose names are not in the book of life as ones to be cast into the "lake" of fire, to be overcome of fire, eternal drowning in fire! "And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire" (Revelation 20:15). God forbid this be your lot. The Lord Jesus Christ only can keep you from this drowning experience. Psalm 18:16, "...he drew me out of many waters. "
