THE BUOY--A buoy (BOO-ee) is a floating object which is anchored in the water to help boats safely enter and leave harbors, rivers, and other bodies of water. Different kinds of buoys are used for different purposes. In U.S. harbors, red buoys mark the right side of the channel for a boat entering a harbor. Black buoys mark the left side. Buoys with horizontal red and black stripes show danger spots. Those with black and white vertical stripes mark the middle of a channel. Buoys are most always numbered. Black buoys are given odd numbers. Red buoys receive even numbers.
Many buoys have lights so they can be seen at night. The color of their lights and the length of their flashes tell the mariner what their signal means. Another type of buoy gives its signal with a whistle, gong, or bell. The motion of the waves lifts the buoy back and forth to give the sound. A buoy may also use electric batteries or compressed gas to make it work.
A buoy, then, serves a very needy function, and a failure to understand and heed its signal could mean disaster. Buoys are identified on marine charts and
maps and are a necessity to water safety.
Now how does this all relate to me? Wouldn't you say man's life is somewhat like a ship that is out on the water of life? Our activities bring us through many stormy situations, to complex and difficult channels and ports. Who would be so foolish as to think that man could direct and guide his own life with no help? In the Bible Jesus said, "I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life" (John 8:12). He stands as the lighthouse and believers as buoys (lower lights) to safely mark the way to the eternal haven or port of rest and peace. Who could choose to ignore and to laugh at a channel marked clearly by buoys and to go their own way to end up on a sandbar or rockpile? Only a fool would, but many laugh and curse the name of Jesus and choose their own way of life, completely excluding Him, and end up with a lost soul. "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death" (Proverbs 14:12).
A buoy is given to aid in safe water travel. Would you trust your life and equipment to man's ability to map and mark out a safe channel area and fail to trust the One who made man--thus losing your soul? "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6).
Has your life been a series of ups and downs, shipwrecks and losses? Jesus stands to help if you will but call. "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Romans 10:13). Call now!
