ADRIFT--On January 16, 1942, an American scout bomber went down in the South Pacific with three men aboard. The plane sank almost immediately, leaving those three alive but adrift in a 4x8-foot raft, with 1 knife, 1 pair of pliers, 1 pistol, no water and no food. From day one an adventure began, filled with impossibilities. Adrift in a raft, tormented--freezing by night, blistering by day, dying from dehydration, no hope, eyes dimming, numb from waist down, sharks everywhere-drifting on and on, 1 day, 2 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, drifting, drifting.

Have you ever really looked at your life in depth? Do you know that most people are somewhat like these three men in the raft? Many have no purpose in life, no goals, accomplishing nothing, making no headway, dying a little at a time, headed for sure destruction. This is true of the rich, the poor, the wicked, the moral, those who sit in church as well as those who sit in bars. What would make a man drift from job to job, town to town, church to church, experience to experience? Physically it would come because of a loss of power. In our story, a plane (the source of power) was lost, and no power was available for the raft, so it was ADRIFT.

Spiritually men drift because of the same. Man's only source of power and direction is God. In Genesis 3 man lost God because of disobedience and for thousands of years has drifted hopelessly, "...having no hope, and without God in the world..." (Ephesians 2:12). God saw the drifting condition of man and gave new hope in Christ. Jesus Christ today stands ready to give power, hope and direction to all who follow Him. "But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ" (Ephesians 2:13). Without Him man drifts on further from God.

There is danger in drifting. It comes so very slowly and silently. A drifting vessel hardly moves. This is so with our lives, slowly we drift away from even those we love, from morals and from God. Then the wind and currents take control. A vessel adrift will go the direction of such. Whichever way the wind of circumstances blow in life, people adrift will go the same. The world and its trends, styles and sins hold all adrift. There is no way to stop this drifting outside of divine power.

Back to our story--on the 34th day with the minds of these three men collapsing with one delusion after another, a miracle happened. Land was sighted! Power and strength from somewhere helped them paddle to that South Sea island. Using shoe soles for paddles, they worked miraculously. They crawled to the beach. Unable to stand, they lay for hours before being found by natives and revived. Medically the ordeal took ten years off their lives.

My friend, how much further will you drift? Jesus can stop your drifting. Ask Him to save you. The gospel (about Jesus) is the "...POWER of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth... "(Romans 1:16).
