I want to attend Church!!!

Which One should I choose?

Choosing the proper Church is important, not only to a seasoned believer, but especially so to a new Christian. Unfortunately it is not as easy as visiting your favorite shoe store.

As with shoes Churches come in many styles and sizes. They may or may not be durable, and they may or may not be comfortable. In today’s world we often hear commercials urging us to shop intelligently. I think this is also sound advice to follow when we are shopping for the proper Church to attend.

Lets go shopping!

What brand should I choose?

  1.        Baptist

  2.     Catholic

  3.      Lutheran

  4.      Presbyterian

  5.      Methodist

  6.      Jehovah’s Witness

  7.       7th Day Adventist

  8.      The list goes on and on….

Believe it, Satan fully endorses some Churches!!!

Most people in today’s world make the work of Satan an easy task. Satan doesn’t spend his labor on those committed to sinful lifestyles but focuses on those looking to lead a clean life. The devil fully realizes that eternal life and Heaven are not gained by a life of good works. Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. With this in mind the devil provides a vast array of churches that cater to what people want to hear, filling that desire to worship and never touching on the subject of sin and its bearing on eternal life.   2Ti 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Wow, this can be confusing but I do like the looks of that beautiful catholic church on the corner.

 The first thing we should understand is that the Church is not a building. A Church consists of the people who make up its’ membership. All memberships are not Churches, only those comprised of ”born again” Christians. (Are you born again click here) These Christians should strive to live their lives in a manner pleasing to God. This is a Baptist site and I am a member of a Baptist Church and you probably expect me to recommend becoming a Baptist. I am sad to say that many Baptist Churches today do not meet the criteria known as Sound Doctrine. What is Sound Doctrine? Doctrine is the standard God expects us to live by and these truths are provided for us in our KJV Bibles. (Why the King James Version? Click here.) Sound means the truth hasn’t been altered. The name a church gives itself is unimportant to God. What is important is whether the Church strives to meet the criteria set for us in His Holy Word.  2Ti 4:3   For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

This is a quick overview of what to look for in a church and Doctrine is too large a study to include here. Our Church’s statement will guide you to some of the proper Scripture.

There is a huge Church in our community that almost everyone goes to, surely that many people can’t be wrong.

The size of a church has no bearing on whether it is doctrinally sound. If a large church is not offering Gods plan of salvation it is only sending people to hell in greater numbers. The purposes of a church are to win souls to Christ, instruct them in the ways of God, and sending those trained converts into the world to witness and start new churches. A new convert may feel more at home in a small church where everyone knows each other as a friend and it is easier to access teachers on a personal basis.

The church I am attending is comfortable; it fits me like a glove.

Be careful of a church that is too comfortable. Sermons should be preached that expose sin and messages that expose sin often leave people feeling as though their toes have been stepped on. A good Christian uses the conviction they feel after a hard lesson by seeking Gods forgiveness and correcting the exposed problem.

Churches that concentrate on making people feel good about their selves are more given to maintaining a large attendance than in presenting Gods Word. It seems to me that this is a business decision, give the people what they want, not what they need.

Money and the Church

God requires us to tithe. What a Church does with Gods money is also a good indication of whether it meet the standards set in the Bible. After the operational costs of an independent church are met, any surplus should be used to win souls to the Lord. A huge bank account collecting interest does nothing for the mission fields and shows little faith in Gods promise to provide for those who come to Him for help!

What is a Fundamental Independent Baptist?

1.      The Bible is our guide in:

a.       What we say

b.      What we do

2.      We believe each Church body is self-governing, we answer only to God.

3.      Every born again believer has direct access to God through prayer, no mediator is needed.

4.      We are baptized after accepting Christ as our personal Savior.

5.      We participate in the Lords Table. (Communion)

6.      Salvation is a gift it cannot be forced.

7.      Separation of Church and State

8.      There are only two offices in the Church:

a.       The Pastor

b.      The Deacons

           9.  Born again membership

I hope this guide helps you in choosing a Church. Hopefully you can match a Church to the nine points listed above. You can be assured that God approves of any Church that meets the criteria He set for us in His Holy Word.

Please read your Bibles! The problems that develop within churches wouldn’t exist if people would use their Bibles. Don’t rely on your teachers to be right all the time, check up on them! You only make it easy for Satan by being willfully ignorant.

II Timothy: 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
